The Townshend Act added new taxes to many goods. This included a tax on lead, glass, paint, oil, and tea. This caused colonists to find other ways to get what they needed. John Hancock was a main smuggler for the colonies, bringing in supplies illegally. This fueled the idea of an independent economy for the colonies.
