Key Event: The development of the telephone is a key event because the invention has revolutionized society, by improving the efficiency and speed of communication.

Defined: Graham Bell did not invent the telephone, but instead had tremendously developed earlier versions. His original goal was to improve the telegraph, but instead had discovered how to send the sound of voice electrically.

Described: Before Graham Bell had developed his version of the telephone, older telephones were called “mechanical acoustic devices” and were unable of transforming audio energy into electrical energy. Instead, they transmitted voice data mechanically (they used pipes or other media). However, those mechanical acoustic devices were not suitable for long distance voice travel, so Bell was inspired to improve upon the creation by updating the popularly used telegraph.

Short Term: At the beginning of the telephone’s creation, the public had neglected the creation as they thought it was fake or just a toy. However, as the public began to explore the idea of the telephone, they discovered that it had allowed for smooth communication and its popularity increased in the 1900s. The telephone was seen as a necessity because it ensured the safety of those who lived in the popular rural Midwest.

Long Term: The creation of the telephone inspired many scientists, such as Thomas Edison, to improve on the device. The Bell Telephone Company was latered created to provide services for phone users. His company would eventually become At&T which is popularly used today.
