3 mar 1865 año - Establishment of Freedmen’s Bureau
Descripción:
The Freedmen’s Bureau was established after the Civil War, by the Radical Republicans, who became known for the impeachment of President Johnson when he became heavily opposed to the change they were attempting to bring to the Union, and especially the South. The Bureau’s goal was to help millions of freedmen in the South by providing them with land, resources, education and overall assisting their transition from slavery to freedom. However, due to the heavy prejudice still present in the Jim Crow South, the radical change that the Bureau was attempting to make only succeeded to a degree. Internal conflicts in Congress also arose during this time, and as the North’s interest in Reconstruction began waning, the Bureau was officially discontinued in 1872, but not without laying the foundation of the civil activism to come in the later decades of American history.
