29 ene 1850 año - Compromise of 1850

Descripción:

The Compromise of 1850 was a series of laws that were passed by Congress in order to deal with the land gained from the Mexican Cession, following the Mexican American War, and was considered a turning point because it introduced the principle of popular sovereignty to the states. This meant that each new state would vote whether it wished to be slave or free. However, the previous balance of states that was present in 1820 during the Missouri Compromise was discontinued as California was admitted as a free state, and the North gained an advantage in the Senate. In seeking fairness, a stricter fugitive slave law was also put into place, which upset many Northerners and prompted them to join the Abolitionist movement. In addition to this, slave trade was abolished in Washington D.C. and Texas was paid ten million dollars to settle border disputes. The implications of this Compromise showed that it was becoming harder for America to deal with the issue of slavery in the west, and niether party was completely satisfied, as tensions began to grow between the North and South.
