6 nov 1860 año - Election of Abraham Lincoln

Descripción:

Key Event: Lincoln’s presidency is a key event because he helps guide the Union to victory during the Civil War and creates the Emancipation Proclamation.

Defined: Lincoln beats Douglas in the Election of 1860. He had received 40 percent of the popular vote, defeating Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union candidate John Bell, and Northern Democrat Stephan Douglas.

Described: Lincoln, who was apart of the free-soil platform, believed that slavery should no longer expand, enraging Southerners. Douglas, his opponent, believed that the territories should have the right to decide on whether slavery should be adopted. In the competition for a U.S. Senate seat in 1858, Stephen Douglas won.

Short Term: The southern states decided to secede because they did not want someone who has different political values to represent them. Instead, they create the Confederate States of America, and Jefferson Davis is their president.

Long Term: One month later after the creation of the Confederate States of America, Lincoln declared war on the Confederates, because they refused to rejoin the Union, starting the civil war. As president, Lincoln had also created the Emancipation Proclamation.
