9 dic 1824 año - South America Becomes Independent

Descripción:

Along with Mexico and Central America, also fighting for independence from Europe was that of South America. Brazil for it's part had been under the control of the Portuguese monarchy since the 16th Century, but after the Napoleonic Wars, the Brazilian population began to lobby for separation from Portugal.

Eventually they prompted the Portuguese King's son, Prince Dom Pedro I, to make himself King of Brazil and declare the nation independent. Dom Pedro did this in the September of 1822 and thus Brazil was free.

Finally, the rest of South America was the last to fight for their independence, and fight they did. Various wars had sprung up amongst the Spanish colonies since 1808 but the two most significant uprisings were led by Simón Bolívar in the north, and José de San Martín in the south. Eventually, one by one, various cities were freed from Spanish rule until finally the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824 essentially marked the end of the Spanish American wars.

With New Spain gone, the former South American colonies gradually fragmented into their own nations including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
