Defused a four-year political confrontation between slave states and free states. Had 5 main parts. 1) Texas surrendered it's claim to New Mexico and the federal government took over the state's public debt. 2) California was admitted as a free state. 3) The South prevented a law that would have prohibited slavery in new territories and the new Utah and New Mexico territories could decide whether they wanted to be free or slave states. 4) Slave trade was banned in Washington D.C. 5) Fugitive Slave Act of 1850: Stated that all escaped slaves would have to be returned to their owner after being caught, even if they were in a free state.
