In 70 CE after the Romans had countered the Jews’ revolt, Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakkai had convinced the Romans to allow him to relocate the Sanhedrin to Yavneh. Here, the Jews were able to preserve and renew their way of life by maintaining their scriptures, writing commentaries on the law and developing a Jewish calendar.
