The Anthracite Coal Strike beginw when coal miners in Pennsylvania demand higher wages, shorter work days, and recognition of their union, the United Mine Workers of America, a union representing coal miners. President Theodore Roosevelt intervened in the strike as a neutral arbitrator, the first time the president or the government has ever done so. The strike threatened the nation's winter fuel supply. The workers got 10% better wages and a 9 hour day, and the owners got better coal prices.
