King Louis XVI calls together the Estates-General, a meeting between representatives of all three Estates, for the first time since 1614. Louis hoped to solve the national debt of France, which was caused due to costly funding of wars, deficit spending, and failure of crops. Nobles hoped the Estates-General could bring the absolute monarchy under control.
