RMS Titanic was a British ocean liner that sank in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic after colliding with an iceberg in the year 1912. On its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City, USA, it accommodated 2,224 passengers and crew being the biggest ship of its time. Dubbed with the title of "The Unsinkable Ship", RMS Titanic had some of the most advanced engineering and failsafe techniques at the time including remote activated watertight compartments that would seal shut to halt the flow of water throughout the ship in the event that the ship was sinking. Of that 2,224 however, more than 1,500 souls perished that fateful evening, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters during peacetime. On April 14, 1912, four days after beginning its journey, the Titanic collided with an iceberg at around 11:40 pm. The collision tore open a hole which caused 5 of the watertight compartments to fill, when it was only able to hold 4. Women and children were only permitted upon lifeboats as there was a shortage. Around 2:20 am, the ship buckled under its own weight into 2 parts and within minutes, the Unsinkable Ship disappeared into the deep. Modern day tragedies such as this were often made subject in literary works during this period.
