Descripción:
When the contemporary period first began, Britain had many political and social ideologies which can be considered medieval and outdated. WWII with all of its horrors and traumas was a huge turning point across the globe and specifically in Great Britain. It caused society to question many social and political viewpoints and acted as a catalyst in the process of the shift in mindset in Britain. As a result, many writers of the period point out social injustices through their work in order for society to question viewpoints that have been around for centuries such as issues concerning gender, popular culture, immigration, whether or not British life and culture is Americanised and whether or not Britain is a society based upon social classes.
Each work of contemporary literature is a message from a person that wants to raise questions about societal norms. For example, Seamus Heaney illuminates the many tragic deaths in Ireland through his poetry in order to call upon the need for change in Great Britain.
While some works of British Contemporary literature concern war stories and the Holocaust, these are not the focused themes of the time period as the works are more about changing popular and outdated viewpoints.
After the second World War, Britain was on a political and economic decline which in turn increased immigration for the need of a larger workforce, therefore racism became a large issue. Jackie Kay’s novel Trumpet also touches on the idea of the injustice of racism and how interracial relationships are still frowned upon to this day.
