18 feb 1886 año - Literature: Realism

Descripción:

During the Victorian period, we see a strong rise of realism. Literature starts to reflect more practical problems and interests. We begin to see a banishment of perfect, picturesque happy endings and the arrival of grimier, grittier books. England was used to seeing these happy-ending stories, but after the death of Charles Dickens in 1870, happy endings were not as common as a figure as powerful in the literary world as he tended to dictate the direction of literature in his era. This change in style came slowly but clear by the end of the nineteenth century. Realistic fiction was not exactly taken well at first. An extreme example can be found when Thomas Hardy’s “Jude the Obscure” was apparently burned by an angry Bishop of Wakefield. The Bishop wasn’t fond of Hardy’s handling of religion, sex, and disregard for marriage. This is significant because the dominant plot for Victorian novels is often times the search for a right marriage. As what often times happens when new ideas are introduced, it took time for people to accept realism in writing. Once it gained acceptance, facing realism became a powerful instrument for human progress.
