1 ene 1770 año - Ndop (portrait figure) of King Mishe miShyaang maMbul

Descripción:

Shows Kuba King Mishe miShyaang maMbul who was celebrated throughout the kingdom for his generosity and for his great number of loyal subjects, he had his own song. This ndop was made at the height of his reign in 1710, it is a portrait statue of himself that solidified his greatness. Instead of written records, people in Africa had passed down traditions orally making it hard to know their history. Kuba artists were professional woodcarvers, blacksmiths, and weavers. The ndop sculptures have rounded contours creating forms that define the head, shoulders, and stomach, and also a defined collarbone. The ndop is not meant to represent the exact likeness of the person but instead the ideal king, it was pretty much interchangeable. The statues were sculpted using a 1 to 3 proportion, the head was one third size of the total statue and it was emphasized because it was considered to be the seat of intelligence. All ndop have a geometric motif and an emblem which helped identify them. Everything in a ndop show the prestige of the nyims. They were made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
