The unraveling began when Shinwari Pashtun tribesmen revolted in Jalalabad in mid-November 1928, cutting telegraph wires and cutting the road to the capital, after which they drew a manifesto of ten grievances, five of which related to what they saw as Amanullah's unsupportable meddling with the status of women.
