The Second Sino-Japanese War began after the Mukden Incident and the Invasion of Manchuria. This war was between the Japanese and the Chinese and lasted from 1937 to 1945. Japan first began occupying Chinese territory and creating puppet governments for better control over the Chinese territory. Japan committed several war crimes throughout this war, including the use of toxic gas which had been banned after WWI.
