The Suez Canal was opened in 1869, it greatly reduced the distance between Britain and India by around 4,500 miles because ships no longer needed to travel round the southern tip of Africa. The Suez Canal together with the reliable service of steam-powered liners led to an increase in merchant and passenger shipping.
