-Considered to be the world’s first theatre.
-Dedicated to Dionysus, the god of plays and wine.
-Could seat up to 17,000 people.
-Was used to celebrate the festival of Dionysia.
-Cut into a cliff and built with amazing acoustics so that every audience member could hear.
-Has been used since 6th century BC.
-Was the birthplace of Greek Drama.
-Many Greek plays were written for the festival.
-The festival also included singing, drinking, and animal sacrifices.
-Masks were used to project actors voices.
-Theatre buildings were called a theatron. Consisted of an orchestra , the skene, and the audience.
-The skene was used as a backstage. It was also sometimes painted as a backdrop.
