The Sepoy Rebellion, also known as the Indian rebellion, occurred in 1857. This rebellion was a response to the harsh treatment by the British, as they used pig and cow fat to lubricate bullet shells and still forced Muslims and Hindus to bite off the end before loading them, even though it was insulting to both faiths. They fought back against the British, who soon gained the upper hand and declared peace.
