The Opium War occurred from 1839-1842 and was literally just a major dilemma regarding the trade of an extremely addictive drug in China. It all began when officials of the British East India company went looking for alternatives to bouillon that would allow for even bigger profits, and they stumbled over opium, which was both profitable and criminal. The illegal trade happened for a long period of time, as corrupt government officials often benefitted. But soon, the Chinese government acted, and it was devastating. The British were outraged with the Chinese action and used their navy to demonstrate their power over China. They eventually paraded up the grand canal, and China soon sued for peace. This was the beginning of the unequal treaties, that greatly benefitted Europe and nobody else.
