30 mar 1849 año - JED Bethune - Female Education

John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune -  barrister and law member of the Governor-General's council. He made pioneering contributions to the female education in India.

He set up Native Female School in 1849 with the help of Indian like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Dakshinaranjan Mukherjee

During his time, there was no official support for female education was not existent till then. None of the official dispatches so far had any reference to female education. He also pushed for legislation towards this regard.

Dalhousie praised Bethune in the following words " Bethune’s work opened the annals of female education in India. You have planted a mustard seed which will one day be a great tree, which you and those we serve may be proud to look upon."

After Bethune's death Dalhousie supported Bethune's schools in their individual capacity.
