The Ottomans lose the battle of Sarikamis which was most likely their biggest defeat in the war. The Ottomans were angry and blamed it on the Armenians because they betrayed the Ottomans in the first place. Because of this all Armenians and non- muslims are removed from arms and are demobilized some were put into labor battalions most were murdered by the Ottomans eventually. At the same time not normal forces began to attack and murder villages of the Armenians near the east Russian border. When word eventually got out the Armenians closed off the city of Van and defended it from the Ottomans. The Ottomans to get back arrested all the Armenian officials and ended up killing most in the next months after there arrest.
