The Battle of Waterloo marked Napoleon's final defeat. Earlier in the year, Napoleon had escaped exile in Elba and returned to France, embarking on his Hundred Days campaign. Napoleon stormed Belgium near Waterloo, and was met by the British army, commanded by the Duke of Wellington, and the Prussians. Napoleon was outnumbered and retreated, and was later exiled to Saint Helena. After Napoleon's rampage across Europe, European leaders wanted peace and stability across Europe, and terms were negotiated at the Congress of Vienna to try to ensure lasting European peace.
