The economy's of the Northern states had moved from farming to industry. A lot of people in the North worked in industries and lived in large cities. The Southern states kept a large farming economy. Their economy was based on slave labor because they helped the plantation owners maintain their way of life. This caused the Civil war because the Southern thought that they were better than the Norths industry because they had slaves.
