Those who had conspired to kill the Chief Judge and establish a king formed a tribe of their own. They appointed a man named Jacob to be their king, and hoped to bring the rest of the people into subjection. However, they soon found that the other tribes were larger and more powerful than they were.
Also, they found that all the other tribes knew that they had been the cause of the collapse. So, while the other tribes all fought with each other, they were united against Jacob and his band. The result of this was that Jacob greatly feared to go against any tribe in battle, as the other tribes would likely come to their assistance, just for the opportunity of destroying Jacob’s people.
So, Jacob led his group into the land that was furthest north in order to prevent them from being surrounded by their enemies. He persuaded them to follow this plan by flattering them that soon there would be many dissenters from the other tribes that would come and join them, so that they would soon be sufficiently strong to go against the other.
