When the siege broke and Robbers fled, Zemnariah led a large portion north. They were cut off by the armies of Gidgiddoni, and while many surrendered, many were also killed.

Zemnariah himself was not killed in battle, but was taken alive and then hung from the top of a tree until he was dead. Once the Nephites were sure that he was dead they cut down the tree.

This, then, became a symbol and covenant; that in their righteousness God would fell to the earth those who would seek their destruction through secret combinations.

After the execution of Zemnariah there was a period of spontaneous celebration where the people as a body began to sing and rejoice, praising their God for their deliverance.
