The General Court of Massachusetts was the body that governed the colony. It was a group of people elected by freemen (who had to belong to the church and own land), which was divided into a bicameral legislature in 1636. One element that made it unique is that the freemen of Massachusetts could elect their governor, rather than one being royally appointed like in Virginia.
