Even though the Robbers found the land abandoned and had taken possession of the many cities and lands, they soon had to return into the wilderness and abandon the cities.
The reason for this was that there was no food left in the cities. The Robbers supported themselves through plunder and theft, but the Nephites had gathered all the food into their stronghold between Zarahemla and Bountiful. There was nothing for them to plunder, and so they had to return to the wilderness where they could hunt for food.
These Robbers knew only war, and any other means of supporting themselves was rejected.
