James Buchanan Jr. was an American politician who served as the 15th president of the United States, serving immediately prior to the American Civil War. Serving as president during the run-up to the Civil War, Buchanan's inability to halt the southern states' drive toward secession has led most historians to consider his presidency a failure. Buchanan was the only U.S. president from Pennsylvania, and the only one to remain a lifelong bachelor
