At the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia, the Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee officially surrendered to Commander Ulysses S. Grant of the Union after a Union victory on the field. The official end of the war proclaimed would occur one month later by Andrew Johnson, acting president. However, this date is more important as it sees the surrender of the Confederates.
