On this day, Siaosi Tupou I formally united the islands of Tonga under one kingdom. Siaosi established a strong constitutional monarchy, becoming one of the great powers in Polynesia. While Tonga would become a British protectorate in the early 20th century, it retained much of its autonomy. Tonga was the only Oceanic state to maintain its own monarchy, which survives to this day.Añadido al timeline:
