(San Marino is the oldest republic in the world, and possibly the oldest continuously sovereign state in the world. It was founded by Saint Marinus, who wished to establish a monastery in the mountains which would be free of Roman control. While San Marino has seen brief occupations by external forces, its sovereignty has never truly been challenged. Because of San Marino's history as a religious haven, and because of its steadfast independence and dedication to democracy, the nations which surround it have always respected it.
