On this day Monaco declared independence from France, which granted it autonomy in exchange for much of its territory. Because of this Monaco is one of the smallest sovereign states in the world, at only 2.1 sq km (0.81 sq mi) in area. Thanks to its lax tax policies and beautiful vistas, Monaco has become home to many wealthy people in Europe, and has the 3rd highest GDP per capita in the world.
