Native to the region around the Andes, and present in Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, coca has been used for an unknown period of time easily measuring in the hundreds of years by the nobles and religious leaders of the people living there. However, with Pizarro and the conquistadors arriving and subsequently conquering the area, coca was freed up and permitted to the common man, letting laborers in the mines tolerate pain and hunger better. Toward the end of the 1500s, raw leaves were brought to Spain, but it was a nearly 300 year delay ‘til Europe at large gained an interest. 1863 brought with it Angelo Mariani’s self-named Bordeaux wine tonic, marketed for insomnia, nervousness, melancholia, impotence, and the flu.
Two years later, a chemist in Georgia by the name of Doc Pemberton came up with the idea for a coca-infused soda: Coca-Cola. Of course, the formulation was later altered in 1906 to get rid of the cocaine content.
