(On this day Guatemala declared independence from the short-lived Mexican Empire, which had absorbed it quickly after it declared independence from Spain 2 years prior. Guatemala would become the seat of the Federal Republic of Central America, which attempted to consolidate the former Spanish colonies of Central America. Guatemala's history has been tumultuous ever since.)
