On this day Finland formally declared independence from Russia following the Russian Revolution, taking advantage of the larger nation's upheaval. Russia would return as the Soviet Union during World War II and attempt to reclaim Finland, but the Finns were able to resist Soviet occupation. Today Finland is one of the freest nations in the world and has a very high quality of life.
