On this day, Albania formally declared independence from the Ottoman Empire after the end of the Balkan Wars. Albania's sovereignty has seen threats since then, namely when it became a protectorate of the Axis Powers during World War II. Following the war, Albania languished under a dictatorship for several decades before establishing a republic.
