After Britain didn't want to open up the Western Front and America wasn't confident enough to have an opinion, the Allies decided it would be best to let Stalin suffer in the east and invade Italy because they could. Within this month they invaded the town of Anzio and began their march up Italy until they were stopped in Rome by German forces (even though Italy surrendered by that point)
