Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager was shot by a white police officer after being spotted walking home with a friend. The police officer, Darren Wilson, claimed that it was self-defense and that Michael seemed suspicious. Wilson was not convicted of murder, and felt justified in his actions against the unarmed teenager. These events further sparked the Black Lives Matter movement which began because of the injustice in law enforcement and the fact that blacks have continually been targeted by white police officers who do not get convicted of their crimes. The point of the movement is to remind people that black lives matter just as much as anyone else.
