Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the new land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase and to research unfamiliar findings as well as information about tribes found on the way to find a route though the western half of the continent and to establish American presence before either Britain or Spain tried to claim the land.
