Augustus didn't create a new office for himself, instead he gradually took over a lot of different offices and made himself leader of these offices with the help of the senate (who for obvious reasons didn't want another civil war. He was consul and presided over the concilicum plebis. He was also named imperator and chief priest. next to all of these he had the senate give him the title of 'first citizen' which held no power but was pleasant to the Roman ear. He, unlike Caesar also wielded all of his power in the background. Even though most people knew what was happening, compared to an area of civil war. the stabillity Augustus reign brought made them accept him.
