Hawaii was an important island to the United States. It was a major source of sugar and sandalwood, two highly valuable goods on the global market. Since 1887, the United States had complete control over Hawaii, but the ascension of Queen Liliuokalani changed that. She changed the Hawaiian constitution to give her more authority. Her government was overthrown by American sugar planters and Hawaii became a US protectorate. This event represents America in the World because the United States sent military assistance to support a rebellion in a foreign nation to ensure they have control over their economic assets.
