The thirteenth amendment to the US Constitution officially ended the institution of slavery. It was ratified about 8 months after the end of the Civil War. It passed the Senate on April 8, 1864, the House on January 31, 1865, the president on February 1, 1865, and finally the necessary number of states on December 6, 1865. The amendment states emancipation of all slavery in the US states, “all persons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free”.
