15 agos 1914 año - Panama Canal
Descripción:
The United States had a strong desire to acquire and finish the Panama Canal. The United States needed the canal for a two-ocean Navy to protect their interests and to reduce time for both trade and military transport greatly. Although Panama was apart of Columbia, and Colombia rejected the United States offer of ten million dollars and two-hundred-fifty-thousand dollars a year to build the canal. Therefore, the United States Navy supported the Panamanian Revolt, and the United States formally recognized Panama as a sovereign nation three days after the revolt. The United States began construction in 1904, and the Panama Canal even opened ahead of schedule in 1914. The Panama Canal allowed the United States to become a world power.
