When Missouri requested to enter the Union as a slave state, turmoil broke out amongst the nation. At the time, the United States had 22 states, and 11 were slave states and 11 were free states. After months of debate and disagreement, the United States decided to allow Missouri to enter the nation as a slave state, but they ensured that Maine (recently added to the nation) and all states North of latitude of 36°30° (besides Missouri obviously) would be free states. This compromise fixed the problem of the uneven split of free and slave states and ultimately kept the nation in tact.
