On January 30, 1933, the president of Germany, Paul von Hindenburg, decided to name Hitler chancellor of Germany because the government thought they could control Hitler and use him for their own purposes. Six days before the election, the Reichstag building, which was where the Parliament met, was burned down, so the Nazis said that the communists burned down the building, winning Hitler a slim majority against his opponents in the election. After Hitler came to power, he transformed Germany into a totalitarian state. Like Stalin, he kept only one political party in the government and he killed or arrested all of his opponents. Hitler outlawed strikes, took control of the economy, and made many people do work such as build factories and highways, manufacture weapons, and serve in the military. Hitler also founded the SS, or the Secret Police, which arrested and murdered all people against Hitler and his totalitarian state secretly.
Hitler becoming the Chancellor of Germany was important because if he hadn't become the Chancellor, he would not have the ability to obtain real power to make large differences in Germany and the world. He would not be able to create a totalitarian state or the SS if he was not Chancellor. Hitler's high position as Chancellor of Germany allowed him to strengthened the Nazis greatly, allowing him to do whatever he wanted during that time, causing Hitler's many disastrous intentions to be possible. If Hitler was not named as Chancellor of Germany, then the Nazis would not be able to rise to power so quickly, and Hitler would not be able to have any real power and do as he wished. World War II might not have started if Hitler was not the Chancellor of Germany because without Hitler, Germany would not invade its neighboring countries, resulting in a longer period of peace in Europe and some more time and possibilities for other world leaders to destroy fascism in the world.
