On October 6, 1986, the people of Canada were awarded the Nansen Medala, an award received from the Nation United (U.N.) for Canada's initiative in sheltering and aiding world refugees. The Nansen Medala award is the highest distinction bestowed by the United Nations for aid to refugees. The award, which in previous years, has always been awarded to an individual. In 1986, it was awarded to all the people in Canada "in recognition of the major and sustained contribution made to the cause of refugees in their country and throughout the world over the years", said a U.N. announcement.
