The Mayflower carried English colonists to Plymouth in early 1620. They were Puritans fleeing religious persecution in the Netherlands after King Henry VIII established the Church of England. They faced many diseases on the journey to America, and eventually settled near modern-day New York. They built peaceful relationships with the Native Americans who already lived there.
