The Alien and Sedition Acts were a series of laws passed regarding foreign relations. These laws were passed in anticipation and fear of a French invasion. The acts increased residency requirements for U.S. citizenship, permitted the arrest and deportation of foreigners suspected of plotting against the government, deportation of any foreign male in times of war, and any foreigner who spoke out against the president or the government.
