When the people rallied to Moroni, Amalikiah saw that his followers were far fewer than those who are flocked to the standard of Moroni. This also caused many of his followers to doubt his cause.
In an attempt to save himself and maintain his power he led those who still followed him to try and join the Lamanites.

However, Moroni headed them in their flight. Amalikaih escaped with a small number of men. The rest were taken by Moroni and those who would not make a covenant to defend the Nephites were put to death.
